Education in Mrs. Bender's Classroom

Mrs. Bender was a teacher that was intimidating.

It wasn't that she was mean or loud or even huge for that matter.

Mrs. Bender was intimidating because it was the first day of school and I happened to be assigned to her classroom.

It was all very new to me. There I was amidst a bunch of strangers gathered together in a room filled with shelves full of interesting stuff along with books and paper and other supplies with no idea what any of it was for.

Of course, all but one of the strangers were a size similar to mine. And, then there was that one big stranger standing in the front of the room behind a desk, in front of a blackboard that filled the wall.

Without being very loud at all, that stranger said "quiet please" and got instant compliance - not a single child made a noise.

She then said "take a seat" and the children strangers as one did so. The result of which left one person standing -the teacher.

Mrs. Bender was a very sedate teacher that exuded certainty. She had no doubt that she would be listened to.

She seemed a bit tired - maybe because she had been teaching for a long time. To my five year old eyes, she appeared to be ancient. Hair tied back in a bun, deep blue dress and very old - but somehow, she still seemed to be able to gently control the classroom without problems and create a very interesting aura of curiosity.

An entire classroom of kids paid attention to her every word.

I think that Mrs. Bender had the art of teaching down pat because the curiosity that was created on the very first day of school stayed with me throughout my student years - then on into life.

She instilled an intense joy of learning that I still have to this day. Life is filled with wonders.

Thank you, Mrs. Bender.
