Inspiration for Art & Creativity

In the days gone by of the ancient past, but only spoken about in Greek and Roman mythology in the present, were nine muses who were the daughters of Zeus, the king of the gods, and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory.

Each muse became associated with an art form, as follows:
Calliope--the muse of epic poetry
Clio--the muse of history
Erato--the muse of love poetry
Euterpe--the muse of lyric poetry
Melpomene--the muse of tragedy
Polyhymnia--the muse of songs of praise to the gods
Terpsichore--the muse of choral songs and dance
Thalia--the muse of comedy
Urania--the muse of astronomy

A person when wanting to create would call upon a muse for inspiration.

In the present day and age, there are many muses that one can call upon to get inspired or to break through blocks that prevent one from creating. Here's a few suggestions.

Music: No matter the art form, music is a universal muse. Add to your favorites, listen to different genre's of music to find more to add to your list.

Reading: Reading a favorite author may help spark the muse.

Creating Fractals: A fractal is generally "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole," [Wikipedia]. Using fractal software you can create different geometric shapes by adjusting settings in a fractal software program. It could be the muse you are looking for.

Chatting: Chatting with like minded folks can get the muse going and spark creativity.

Browsing: Browsing through galleries, books and magazines to see the works of artists in history and the present may be a great muse for you.

Take a Walk: Take a walk in a park, a city or a hike in the wilderness. Looking at nature, birds, animals, the interaction of people, etc. may be just the muse you are looking for.

When you find that you want to create, but are not able to, try one of the suggestions above to spark the muse.

Contributor's Note

As an author and fine artist, I use the muses that I wrote about to spark creativity with the idea that perhaps I can help another to break through blocks, get inspired and create wonders.
